課程概述

Course Description
Eros was an important element in Western thought and culture from the ancient Greeks, through the Renaissance and into modern Existentialism and beyond. Yet, it was concealed in most philosophy, which stressed rational methods. Indeed, Eros still has an ill-defined place in philosophy and academia. The seminar will examine the meaning and expressions of Eros, particularly in Empedocles, Plato, Pico, Kierkegaard, Nietzsche, Freud, Lacan, Barthes, etc., and consider related expressions in Western culture. The Greeks, especially the Athenians, embraced a multifaceted understanding of Eros, perhaps due to their open society, rich friendships and pantheon of many gods. Particular attention will be paid to Plato who defined Eros for the tradition and related it to the quest for truth, beauty and reality, Pico who restored Eros after the Medieval Age, Kierkegaard and Nietzsche who restored Eros and passion after the Age of Reason as essential ingredients in the full life and as encompassing interpersonal love and divine love. Interestingly, Freud tied Eros to the pleasure principle, which in “Beyond the Pleasure Principle” he identified as the pleasure drive, which correlated the death drive, and saw the pair anticipated and modeled cosmically by the pre-Socratic philosopher Empedocles. Lacan and Barthes offer more subtle, personal contemporary accounts of Eros. Complementary literary texts might include Don Giovanni, Don Juan, Madam Bovary, etc.

Course Objectives
Eros is an essential ingredient of life and the very heart of the most moving cultural and literary expressions. We in the humanities need to understand and appreciate Eros and its expressions deeply in order to understand human life and culture more deeply and holistically. Unfortunately, perhaps due to the interference of some religious traditions, Eros has been concealed or glossed over by much philosophy and even academic study. (Admittedly, some religious traditions and expressions are erotic.) The seminar is aimed to offer the occasion to study and discuss together the fundamental definitions, texts, cultural backgrounds and expressions of Eros in the West. Generally, the first month will be focused on Plato’s dialogues, particularly Symposium, Phaedrus, Lysis, selections from the Republic, etc. The next several weeks will cover other classical Greek and Latin sources, such as Empedocles, and Renaissance sources, such as Pico, Dante and Petrarch. We will then spend a month on Kierkegaard who wrote not only The Banquet, which was modeled on Plato’s Symposium, but a long volume of erotic aesthetic works in Either/Or, notably the Diary of a Seducer. Kierkegaard will open the door to discussing Don Giovanni and Don Juan. In the closing weeks, we will read and discuss Nietzscbe, Freud, Lacan and Barthes and the students will give presentations about their research projects.
